Southampton vs. Swansea City
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME REPORT
Southampton and Swansea started their seasons with an entertaining 0-0 draw on Saturday, though it proved a heavily one-sided affair. From the off Southampton were the side on top but their inability to put the ball in the net on home soil carries on from last season and it's now six games at St Mary's in which the hosts have failed to find the onion bag. They nearly got off to the perfect start as Ryan Bertrand picked out Dusan Tadic on the edge of the six-yard box but the Serb could only prod wide when he should've done better. Paul Clement's side defended resiliently at times though it was more the hosts' lack of quality finishing which kept this game devoid of any goals. Abraham had Swansea's main chance of the second half after 30 seconds when he produced an exquisite turn before seeing a shot blocked by Davis. Southampton nearly won it late on when Maya Yoshida's free kick struck the side netting before sub Charlie Austin did the same after a good run moments later.
90' FULL TIME
There goes the full time whistle. It finishes all square at 0-0.
90' CLOSE AGAIN
Southampton nearly put the ball in the net finally as Charlie Austin bursts away from his man but smashes the ball into the side netting.
90' FREE KICK
Southampton come agonisingly close to winning the game from a free kick around 30 yards out. Maya Yoshida takes it and curls it into the side netting with Lukasz Fabianski rooted to the spot.
90' THREE MINUTES
There will be three minutes for either side to bag a crucial winner.
87' SUB
Final change for the visitors as young striker Oli McBurnie replaces Wayne Routledge. The forward finished as the Premier League 2 player of the year last season - no mean feat but can he cut it in the big time?
85' HANDBALL SHOUT
The home fans feel they should have a penalty now as Jack Stephens' volley flies into the hands of Kyle Bartley who has his hands up but in fairness the ball came at him from a yard away.
82' SUB
Paul Clement must be happy with a point as he brings off Tammy Abraham and brings on a defender in Kyle Bartley. They've soaked up immense pressure this afternoon but if they go a goal down now their options up front are slim.
79' OVER
Southampton come close once again and it's the midfield machine Oriol Romeu who gets onto a free kick and sends it just over with Lukasz Fabianski beaten.
77' BIDING TIME
Saints are biding their time and are having a good spell of possession deep in the Swansea half. Swansea are sitting deep however and the hosts are finding it hard to create.
74' CHANGE
It's Swansea's turn to make a sub now as Jay Fulton replaces Leon Britton.
71' SUB
Another sub for the hosts now as Mauricio Pellegrino looks to get off to a winning start. Sofiane Boufal is on to bring a bit of a spark to the midfield. James Ward-Prowse goes off.
70' SUB
Change for the hosts as Charlie Austin comes on for Manolo Gabbiadini.
68' CROSS
Gabbiadini looks to provide the chances rather than taking them now and fires a low cross towards the penalty spot but no one is there to finsh off the move.
65' DRIVEN WIDE
Manolo Gabbiadini is in the thick of it again but he's not got his shooting boots on today as he fires a low drive wide of the post.
61' CROSS
Good chance for Southampton to finally break the deadlock now as he gets on the end of a cross but sees his effort cleared away by Kyle Naughton.
58' HIT BACK
Southampton come forward in numbers but can't produce any flair to create anything and Alfie Mawson deals with the attack.
54' CURLED WIDE
Manolo Gabbiadini started life at Southampton in electric form scoring four in his opening six games. He comes close now but can only curl wide of the post with his effort.
50' RIFLED
A home free kick is cleared away well and the Swans counter with pace. Jordan Ayew has it on the left and fails to beat his man, seeing the ball deflect back to Martin Olsson who drills the ball into the box but it evades everyone and goes for a throw-in.
47' NEARLY
Despite being second-best in the first period Swansea very nearly take the lead. Tammy Abraham brings out a sublime turn in the box before seeing his curling effort blocked by Steven Davis. It rebounds to Leroy Fer who blazes over from the angle.
46' UNDERWAY
The second half kicks off. No changes at the break.
45' HALF TIME REPORT
Southampton and Swansea go in goalless at the half time interval but the game has not been without chances thus far. Mauricio Pellegrino will be pleased in-part with the performance of his time but will be concerned by the fact that it's now over 500 minutes in which Saints have failed to find the onion bag at home. They should have been a goal up inside four minutes as Manolo Gabbiadini wasted a good chance from a corner before Dusan Tadic poked wide from six yards. Swansea have had chances themselves and they've fallen to new signing Tammy Abraham though he has struggled up top on his own.
45' HALF TIME
Mike Jones blows his whistle and it's goalless at the break.
45' ONE MINUTE
One minute will be added on here.
44' BLOCKED
Swansea come forward in a rare move but Tammy Abraham is isolated up front and has to go for goal but sees his effort well blocked by Jack Stephens.
40' SLOW DOWN
After what has been a fairly high-octane game so far, Southampton take some time out to play the ball around at the back and plan their next move. Five minutes to the break and we're still goalless.
36' CORNERS
Southampton win yet another corner, their fifth of the half, as they look to go ahead. It's a good ball in and is knocked down Maya Yoshida who attempts the acrobatic but can't direct it goalwards.
33' AGGRESSIVE
Southampton pick up another booking as Romeu flies in for a 50/50 aerial ball and is judged to have gone in too hard so the ref issues the caution.
30' CORNER
Southampton have a corner which Oriol Romeu attacks but his effort is blocked. The ball drops back to Dusan Tadic who plays it into Romeu but his cross double deflects off him and the visitors can regroup from a goal kick.
27' BIG DECISION
Big call from Mike Jones now as he decides against awarding Southampton a penalty as Tadic goes down under the challenge of Federico Fernandez. Tadic clearly gets to the ball first and it's a blatant foul but he's giving nothing.
24' JUST OVER
Southampton applying all the pressure here and Nathan Redmond strides forward elegantly but sees his arrowed effort fly inches over the bar with Lukasz Fabianski backtracking.
20' DEFLECTED OVER
Southampton have another decent chance to take the lead as Steven Davis does well to get into the box and play the ball back to James Ward-Prowse, who sees his goal-bound shot deflected over.
17' BOOKING
Early needless booking for the hosts as Nathan Redmond goes to stick out a foot to block a kick from the goalkeeper and is welcomed by a yellow card from referee Mike Jones.
15' FREE KICK
Straight down the other end and Southampton have a set-piece of their own. It's wasted however as James Ward-Prowse, whose delivery is usually first class, fails to beat the first man and the Swans clear.
13' FREE KICK
The away side send a free kick into the box through Tom Carroll and it's into a promising area but Jack Stephens is up well to head the danger away.
11' JUST WIDE
Tammy Abraham is proving a nuisance for the visitors and he goes very close to marking his first start with a goal. The Chelsea loanee rises highest to meet a ball into the box but his header while going away from goal curls just wide of Fraser Forster's post.
9' BLOCKED
The hosts are back on the front foot and Tadic chases a ball into the area but Alfie Mawson sweeps across and blocks the Serb's run - fairly, I should point out - and the ball rolls out for a goal kick.
7' GOOD CROSS
Swansea City come forward with their first attack of the game and it's a decent cross from the left which debutant Tammy Abraham challenges Maya Yoshida for but the Japanese defender does well to beat the forward.
4' MISS
Big chance for the hosts and they really should be in front now. Nathan Redmond holds the ball in midfielder and slides Ryan Bertrand in down the left and the full-back picks out Dusan Tadic on the edge of the six yard box but the Serbian can only poke wide. Swansea can count themselves lucky - good start from the home side.
1' UNDERWAY
These two teams' seasons are up and running!
0' SWANSEA TEAM NEWS
Paul Clement gives Tammy Abraham his debut up top following a loan move from Chelsea after a successful stint at Bristol City last year. Club stalwart Leon Britton starts in midfield after featuring sparingly last campaign, meaning new signing Roque Mesa is only on the bench.
0' SAINTS TEAM NEWS
Mauricio Pellegrino names a familiar squad for his first game in charge of Southampton, with key players Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond included, alongside Manolo Gabbiadini, who will be hoping to build on his strong start since his move from Napoli in January. New signings Mario Lemina and Jan Bednarek are named on the bench.

0' PREVIEW
Yet another Premier League season gets underway for these two teams this afternoon as Southampton host Swansea at St Mary's. Saints' new manager Mauricio Pellegrini may ring a bell to some English fans - as a player he had a quiet spell at Liverpool towards the end of his career in 2005. The Argentine has since gone into management and after disappointing spells with Valencia and then in his native Argentina, he gained recognition last season as he helped La Liga minnows Alaves to a top ten finish after a ten-year absence from the top flight while also guiding the club to the Copa del Rey final - an identical record to his predecessor Claude Puel who took Southampton to the top half and the League Cup final. He'll be hoping to make a quick impact after a poor end to last season for the South Coast club who won just one of their final eight games. Following on from two managerial changes last season, Swansea have opted to stick with their manager Paul Clement through the summer months after the former Derby manager steered the Swans clear of relegation despite looking a sure thing early in the season. With the Swans ending the 16-17 season strongly with three wins in a row making it five unbeaten, they're looking for a fourth consecutive win which would make it their longest in Premier League history, surpassing the three in a row set towards the end of the 14-15 season.
0' TRANSFER SAGAS
Both sides' off-seasons have been completely dominated by two players; Virgil van Dijk and Gylfi Sigurdsson, who incidentally will not feature today. Both have been heavily linked with mega-money moves to sides further up the table. Dutchman Van Dijk looked all set for a £60m move to Liverpool not so long back but Southampton reported the Merseyside club following a supposed 'illegal approach'. The move looked to be on the rocks, though the defender has personally come out himself recently with a transfer request following his intention to play Champions League football. Whilst there doesn't seem to be as much hostility around the Iceland international's proposed move away, no side is yet to meet Swansea's valuation of £50m with Leicester having a £40m bid rejected, while Everton have also failed with a bid in that region.
0' TEAM NEWS
Van Dijk misses out through a virus in what is the hosts' only worry, as new boss Pellegrini could hand debuts to Jan Bednarek and record signing from Juventus Mario Lemina. Swansea will be without star man Sigurdsson, while Ki Sung-yueng, Nathan Dyer and Fernando Llorente are out injured, so Tammy Abraham and Roque Mesa may make their Swansea bows.
0' OFFICIALS
Mike Jones is the referee for today's game, with Mark Scholes and Derek Eaton his assistants. The fourth official is Stephen Martin.
