After five years at Ferrari, Fernando Alonso emerged as a frustrated man rather than a driver fulfilling his dreams. Beaten for the championship in the final race of the season twice in four years, the Spaniard's prowess with the car - perhaps the best in the field then - was scantily rewarded. This forced Alonso to take a decision to quit the scarlet Scuderia in search for greener pastures. That led him to his old team McLaren. Despite a relationship ending in disaster at the end of 2007, McLaren and Alonso realised that if success for both parties needed to be rekindled, it had to be done by leaving their differences behind. But the return was a disaster in itself as Honda's power unit was woefully inadequate with Fernando enduring perhaps his most frustrating season. Alonso has the unmatched, uncanny ability to beat the best out of an underperforming car. His exploits with Ferrari in 2012 were simply out of this world. It's his fight-to-the-finish attitude that has earned the Spaniard not one but two world championships, and successive ones at that, ending the domination that Michael Schumacher had unleashed in Formula One during the German's Ferrari years. Ferrari couldn't capitalise on his talent, disappointing the Spaniard year after year, testing his patience. Alonso consequently decided that he had enough and jumped ship to start over again at McLaren, to what he calls unfinished business. He was frustrated on three occasions as he lost the championship in the final race in 2007, 2010 and 2012. It's a steep task to gun for another championship with the McLaren he drives. He clearly deserves more, but at the end of the day, he has to make results speak.
