Nico Hulkenberg is a clear indicator of what is wrong with Formula One today. Immensely talented and highly rated by the paddock, the German is yet to secure a drive at the top end. Having made his debut in 2010, when he grabbed an impressive pole position with Williams in Brazil, Hulkenberg was dropped for the following year in favour of Pastor Maldonado's bank account. He then spent a year with Force India as a reserve driver before earning a race seat at the Silverstone-based outfit. He impressed there yet again, decimating the hugely-talented teammate Paul di Resta, highlighted by leading the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix. He was then lured by Sauber, which had an impressive 2012 season, but found himself in a struggling car in the first half of the campaign. When the car improved, he marked it with some notable performances; he qualified third in Monza and later in Korea he held off the challenge from Lewis Hamilton, closely followed by Fernando Alonso, to finish a remarkable fourth. A promising Lotus was expected to sign him for 2014 but finances dictated his future yet again, with Maldonado's hefty sponsorship bumping the German one more time. Consigned to a mid-field team Force India, it only robbed Hulkenberg the opportunity to rattle world champions and the sport a good show. Further ousted from the team, the German made the switch to Renault for the 2017 season and he is out to capture some much-deserved success. And if his Le Mans 24 Hours triumph on his debut doesn't prove a point, then probably nothing will.
