The fact that Bottas was the first choice to take up the Mercedes seat vacated by champion Nico Rosberg speaks volumes of his potential. His rookie season in 2013, in an uncompetitive Williams, didn't offer the Finn much of an opportunity but he shone whenever he could. And despite a troublesome campaign, he was pegged by most observers as championship-material. Handed a competitive car the following year, Bottas delivered - particularly as veteran teammate Felipe Massa fumbled. He had managed podiums, but he wasn't handed a car to drive to the top step. His 2015 season wasn't striking but he managed to upstage his veteran teammate again. He repeated that in 2016 and was set to continue for another season at Williams before Mercedes decided he was the best driver available to partner Lewis Hamilton. Mild-mannered and idiosyncratically to the point like any of his compatriots, Bottas may be unspectacular but he makes up for it with his almost metronomic driving, bereft of any mistakes. Although he faces stiff competition from a teammate who is perhaps one of the best drivers in the world right now, Bottas is more than capable of causing a few upsets and maybe even give him a good run for his money.
