Having impressed with a podium in his debut Formula One appearance, Kevin Magnussen was almost instantaneously pegged as the next superstar. Son of former F1 driver Jan, who also raced for McLaren, Kevin became the first rookie signed by the British team since Lewis Hamilton in 2007. The signs were all there. But that podium in Melbourne remained as the Dane's high point of the season as McLaren failed to provide him with competitive machinery throughout the course of his maiden F1 campaign. He did, however, give teammate and 2009 world champion Jenson Button a hard time in qualifying battles, suggesting that the talent only needed honing. At the end of the season, however, Magnussen was comprehensively outscored by Button and was consequently dropped. After a year on the sidelines, Kevin returned to F1 with Renault for a rare second chance after Pastor Maldonado's financial backing dried up, but managed to rack up just seven points in the entire 2016 season. But he didn't feature in Renault's long term plans with Magnussen finding the embracing arms of Haas in 2017.
