Son of former Formula One driver Jonathan Palmer, who started 82 races but failed to step on the podium, Jolyon would be hoping to achieve much more than his dad. After spending a year at Renault as their reserve driver, Jolyon was given his first real opportunity with the team for the 2016 season. His gritty approach, particularly in the second half of the campaign, earned him an extension. He knows he has a lot on his plate, competing as he is with the experience of Nico Hulkenberg. But he has some of the credentials at least. Jolyon won the GP2 Series championship in 2014 in his fourth attempt and finished runner up in Formula Two season in 2010. Besides these two achievements, his career in racing has had sporadic moments of success with an odd win or two here and there in the junior categories. His stint with Lotus as a test driver in 2015, which comprised 13 FP1 sessions, has done him a world of good, preparing him for the rigours of an F1 season. But it remains to be seen how much he has developed to usher in Renault's return as an independent manufacturer in F1.
