Minute by Minute
Summary: It was a no-contest at the end as Hamilton blew away the opposition. He now matches Ayrton Senna's pole tally of 65, moving up to second in the all time list. The Briton's sixth pole in Canada matches another legend, Michael Schumacher's six top spots in Montreal.

With Mercedes marginally ahead of Ferrari in long runs, according to practice pace, it looks like a weekend in the bag. But degradation will be key that could bring Vettel back into the fight.

All to play for. Join us again on Sunday at 1800 GMT to find out who takes the chequered flag.
Minute 45: Second sector purple for Hamilton. Front lock up at the hairpin. HAMILTON GOES EVEN FASTER! Bottas fails to improve. Raikkonen improves his time but not his position. Nothing special from Vettel in the first sector... and then he locks up at the hairpin. The German improves but it isn't enough. Hamilton bags his sixth Canadian GP pole!
Minute 44: Hamilton with the fastest first sector.
Minute 43: More runs in the order. This ain't over!
Minute 42: Bit of oversteer for Vettel at Turn 7, which can account for the four-thousandths. Vettel back in the pits.
Minute 41: Vettel with the fastest first sector. Hamilton's lap under threat? He has to be inch-perfect. He goes faster, but still 0.004 seconds off! That was quite something.
Minute 40: The grid seems to have been established, at least team-wise. Mercedes, followed by Ferrari and then Red Bull.
Minute 39: Still, we need to establish the rest of the grid, that warrants the continuation of qualifying.
Minute 38: Doubt anyone can match Hamilton. That's sign, sealed and delivered.
Minute 37: Bottas slots in second, 0.386 seconds off the pace. Raikkonen's lap was over a half a second away. Discount Vettel's lock up and it still wouldn't have been enough. Hamilton in his element.
Minute 36: Seb locks up at the hairpin. That'll cost him. Hamilton goes a whole 0.632 seconds quicker to take provisional pole.
Minute 35: Hamilton characteristically weaving on the back straight. Getting warmed up. Vettel starts his lap.
Minute 34: Q3 is underway. A 12 minute-battle for pole position. Ferrari or Mercedes? Vettel or Hamilton? The smart money is on Hamilton. Vettel is the first driver to head out, ahead of Hulkenberg and Lewis.
Minute 33: Chequered flag waves to end Q2. Final laps still underway. Kvyat coasting on the back straight with a right-rear puncture. Replays show he banged the wheel at the exit of Turn 9. So, eliminated in Q2: Kvyat, Alonso, Sainz, Grosjean and Palmer.
Minute 32: Wonder if Vettel has a problem. Raikkonen is out on track and the Finn had already set a faster time than his teammate.
Minute 31: Vettel the only one in the garage. Is he confident his time his safe?
Minute 30: Most drivers have headed out. It'll be a frantic end to the leg. Expect traffic to upset a few as well.
Minute 29: "Looks like we’re going to see all the top 10 starting on ultrasoft tomorrow," reckons Pirelli. "Scope for those from 11th onwards to do something interesting." Remember, the drivers who head to Q3 will start the race on tyres on which they set their fastest times in Q2.
Minute 28: Only Hulkenberg and Grosjean out as the track falls quiet. Most preparing to head out again.
Minute 27: Alonso reports that he has less power than he had in Q1. A Honda issue was inevitable, wasn't it?
Minute 26: Red Bull only three-tenths away from the fastest time. Impressive improvement!
Minute 25: Raikkonen just 0.084 off the pace and Bottas a further 0.004 seconds away. Vettel is a quarter of a second slower, a mistake costing his lap.
Minute 24: "Traffic is a nightmare at the moment," moans Kvyat.
Minute 23: Yellow flags. Sainz spins out under braking at Turn 1, similar to Wehrlien's off. But the Toro Rosso stays clear of the barriers and carries on.
Minute 22: Hamilton sets the quickest time of the weekend so far!
Minute 21: "Q2 underway now: and no sign of the supersofts. Yet," observes Pirelli, eager to see how their range of products work around here.
Minute 20: Hamilton and Massa maintain their 100 percent record of out-qualifying their teammates this season. It's the first time Massa has out-qualified a teammate in Canada. Astonishing! We see Hollywood legend Michael Douglas in the hospitality, chatting away with F1's commercial head Sean Bratches.
Minute 19: Q2 is GO. This segment will last 15 minutes and will see 5 drivers eliminated again with the remaining ten to head to Q3.
Minute 18: Yellow flags. That's the end of Q1. Wehrlein spins under braking at Turn 1 and spears backwards into the barriers. No one will be able to improve their times as the track is being cleared. So the drivers eliminated are: Vandoorne, local boy Stroll, Magnussen, Ericsson and Wehrlein. Palmer will be relieved to progress, although he is nearly two-tenths off his teammate Hulkenberg. Fantastic effort by Grosjean too, considering he hasn't been happy with his car all practice.
Minute 17: Final runs. Some weaving to get their tyres up to prepare for their final shot.
Minute 16: Sauber the slowest car yet again. Consider them eliminated already.
Minute 15: The new power unit behind the Williams hasn't got it any closer to the Red Bull. A good two-tenths between the two. Still, early days...
Minute 14: Raikkonen grazes the wall at Turn 9, then promptly complains about the tyres. He ain't happy.
Minute 13: Bottas throwing in a challenge at Hamilton. That should make it interesting in the Mercedes camp.
Minute 12: The Ferrari drivers are the only ones on the supersoft tyres, the rest on the ultrasofts. So more to come from the Scuderia.
Minute 11: Vandoorne kicks up the dirt as he scrapes through the grass, close to the wall at the exit of Turn 7, the McLaren twitching around as it powers on.
Minute 10: Force India and Williams running new Mercedes engines, the former looking particularly quick around here.
Minute 9: Bottas goes quickest! Magnussen locks up at Turn 8 and takes the run off area to stay out of trouble.
Minute 8: Hamilton only 0.030 seconds off the pace, sitting behind Vettel.
Minute 7: Mercedes drivers on their out laps, Hamilton weaving around on the back straight. The Silver Arrows taking an extra lap to get the heat into the tyres.
Minute 6: Grosjean reports the poor grip the circuit has to offer.
Minute 5: Traffic already a concern this early on. It's a short and quick lap this one.
Minute 4: Anything in the 1m 13s bracket isn't uber-competitive. Just enough for the frontrunners to get through to Q2. Fastest time in FP3 was a 1m 12.572s, remember.
Minute 3: Sainz is the first to set a time. Kvyat follows suit.
Minute 2: The Ferrari duo are out early on. Not the Mercedes pair though.
Minute 1: It's ON! Qualifying is go as the lights at the end of the pit lane turn green. It's Q1, with all 20 drivers to participate. Remember, 5 drivers will be eliminated after this 18-minute leg with the remaining 15 to proceed to Q2.
Preview: Bonjour! It's time to find who has the pace this weekend for the Canadian Grand Prix. It's been running close in practice with Ferrari marginally ahead although Mercedes may have been sandbagging. Montreal has been Lewis Hamilton's happy hunting ground so expect him to trip Ferrari's little momentum. Anything else would be a bit of a surprise. But stranger things have happened. Qualifying at the Circuit Gilles Villenueve begins at 1700 GMT. Find who gets eliminated and who bags pole position.
