Vijay Mallya formed Force India after he joined forces with the Mol family, co-owners of the then Spyker team in late 2007. A difficult first full season for the team in 2008 saw them finish tenth in the championship as they focused on establishing a good foundation, the fruits of which are evident today. The Silverstone-based outfit switched to Mercedes engines in 2009, providing them a solid start to develop the car. These decisions proved fruitful as the outfit moved up the grid and began to challenge for points. Giancarlo Fisichella secured the team's first podium finish at the 2009 Belgian GP and has since undoubtedly become the strongest mid-field team. Scoring points regularly, it finished seventh in the championship in 2010, just a solitary point behind sixth place, then sixth in 2011, seventh again in 2012 and another sixth in 2013 and 2014, nearly emerging as challengers to McLaren for fifth in the last two years. In 2015, it finally managed to break into the top 5 and capped off a strong 2016 season with a best-ever fourth place finish, laced with podiums. Force India has also been the hot bed for fielding emerging drivers that accentuates the efficient structure of the team. Little wonder it has been punching above its weight.Vijay Mallya formed Force India after he joined forces with the Mol family, co-owners of the then Spyker team in late 2007.
